Ordinary World

In the  book No Escape by Norah McClintock we learn about Terri Tyson's attack. Terri Tyson was brutally beaten to the point where if her mother hadn't heard her scream and come to find Terri, she would likely be dead. Terri suffered permanent brain damage from her attack. She will never walk again and spends all of her life in a wheel chair. She can bearly manage a couple of words and gets very upset when anyone (including her parents) touch her.
Before Terri was attacked she was a very smart, beautiful and happy girl with tons of possibilities for a pleasing future.  In high school we hear that she was very smart and a tutor to Calab Darke (a boy who didn't want to be at school). After spending enough time with Calab she began to fall in love, before her attack she had been dating him for several years. Fact is they were engaged. Even though Calab loved Terri and Terri loved Calab her parents didn't like her being with him. Terri had been accepted to a university before her attack and her parents wanted her to leave Calab to go to the university.

Above is what I imagine Terri and Calab to be like before her attack. Completely in love and ultimately happy with their lives together.

Even though we never actually hear Terri talk in the book I was still able to gather the following quotes that I believe will help readers get a better idea of what Terri's ordinary world is like. "Terri is a bright girl with a good future"(McClintock, 175-176) and "The right thing was accepting the university scholarship Terri had been offered." (McClintock, 176).

Free Choice

In the book I'm currently reading (No Escape by Norah McClintock) there is controversy over whether or not a convicted felon (Calab Darke) should be able to live in his home town after serving his time. He wishes to live there because he still loves his ex-fiance even though he was convicted of brutally beating her until she suffered extreme brain damage. He however didn't confess that he did it even though it would have shortened his sentence. Everyone else wants him out of town because they believe he is guilty and that he is going to come after Terri Tyson (his ex-fiance) again.
I want to know whether or not he is really guilty. Why he wouldn't plead guilty if he was? Why is it such  a big deal? If they want him to leave Terri alone so badly why don't  they (Terri's family) move? Why does it seem that Terri still loves him? Why does Calab act as though he still loves Terri?
I believe these questions can be answered best through reading the rest of the book however because I'm not done reading this book yet I feel there are a couple of ways these questions can be answered. If we suppose that Calab Darke really didn't Hurt Terri then we have an answer to most questions. She really does still love because he did nothing to harm her and he didn't plead guilty because he isn't guilty. As to why Terri's family doesn't move her away from Calab it could be because it would be to traumatizing for her to move away from everyone she's every known or it could be because if they move away we have no story. However, if we assume Calab really did hurt Terri then it's possible that because of that very traumatizing night she doesn't remember that he hurt her and therefor she still thinks that she loves him. It is also possible that Calab regrets his actions and still loves her even though he hurt her to such extent. I think he didn't plead guilty because he doesn't want to admit that he would beat Terri (someone that he loved very much) to the extent of almost killing her.

Because of Terri's beating she will spend the rest of her life in a wheelchair.

I feel this picture represents what I imagine the looks Calab and Terri give each other even though they look nothing like this.

I decided against putting any videos because the videos that would suit this book would be one of a man beating a woman and I feel that even though that is something common in our society, it is not something that we should be watching. As you may know youtube videos can be violent and contain scenes not suitable  for our school audience.
